Twitter has evolved significantly since it launched in 2006 as a simple, short messaging service. Twitter is no longer simply a platform to "microblog," as it was initially designed. Twitter is now a powerful platform to know, understand, and segment your community.

The idea of data-driven nonprofits isn't new. You probably know that using data can help boost your fundraising. It can help deliver a better donor experience and give you deeper insights into your donors, ultimately helping you engage more supporters and inspire more donations.

But are you getting the most out of your data?

For nonprofits, 2020 was the year of going digital. Many transitioned their in-person fundraising events to virtual events. Others canceled in-person fundraising events and launched new online fundraising campaigns to make up for the lost revenue.

There are many types of nonprofits that are not able to implement work-from-home policies due to the nature of their work, including museums, shelters, and health care providers. When disaster strikes, charities and civil society organizations are often called upon to deliver critical aid. But what if a nonprofit itself is threatened?

Nonprofits today face a variety of potential disasters, from earthquakes and wildfires to cyberattacks and global pandemics. Below are resources from the nonprofit disaster recovery experts at TechSoup, outlining how organizations of any size can ramp up their disaster preparedness.

I started this blog post on disaster communications initially in response to the wildfires in Australia and earthquakes in Puerto Rico (seems a lifetime ago doesn't it?). But, of course, we're now also thinking about the COVID-19 global pandemic, which, like a disaster, is displacing people from their normal ways of operating.

What a year.

In the wild ride that was 2020, most of us nonprofit staff moved out of the office and into our living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms in a master class in "making it work!" And as we figured out not only how to manage our organizations remotely, but also how to deliver our programs and fundraise from the couch, we acquired technology to help us. And boy, did we acquire technology — hardware, software, implementation services — whatever it took to work remotely, collaborate with our colleagues, and engage with our constituents.

Last year, TechSoup — and much of the nonprofit sector across the world — was forced to rapidly transition to a fully remote workplace. It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but it forced us to focus on how we operate and work together and how we push forward our own digital transformation. It also further highlighted the need for this transformation to occur in the nonprofit sector at large.

As organizations and society in general have become more dependent on the Internet and access to digital information, attempts to exploit weaknesses in technology systems have increased. The aim of these is to gain access to information, disrupt services, or cause harm to brand reputation and client trust. According to the FY20 Microsoft Digital Defense Report, in 2020, Microsoft blocked over 13 billion malicious emails.
